Psalm 18

1  I love you, O Lord my strength. ♦︎
The Lord is my crag, my fortress and my deliverer,
2  My God, my rock in whom I take refuge, ♦︎
my shield, the horn of my salvation and my stronghold.
3  I cried to the Lord in my anguish ♦︎
and I was saved from my enemies.
4  The cords of death entwined me ♦︎
and the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
5  The cords of the Pit fastened about me ♦︎
and the snares of death entangled me.
6  In my distress I called upon the Lord ♦︎
and cried out to my God for help.
7  He heard my voice in his temple ♦︎
and my cry came to his ears.
8  The earth trembled and quaked; ♦︎
   the foundations of the mountains shook;
they reeled because he was angry.
9  Smoke rose from his nostrils
and a consuming fire went out of his mouth; ♦︎
burning coals blazed forth from him.
10  He parted the heavens and came down ♦︎
and thick darkness was under his feet.
11  He rode upon the cherubim and flew; ♦︎
he came flying on the wings of the wind.
12  He made darkness his covering round about him, ♦︎
dark waters and thick clouds his pavilion.
13  From the brightness of his presence, through the clouds ♦︎
burst hailstones and coals of fire.
14  The Lord also thundered out of heaven; ♦︎
the Most High uttered his voice
with hailstones and coals of fire.
15  He sent out his arrows and scattered them; ♦︎
he hurled down lightnings and put them to flight.
16  The springs of the ocean were seen,
and the foundations of the world uncovered ♦︎
   at your rebuke, O Lord,
at the blast of the breath of your displeasure.
17  He reached down from on high and took me; ♦︎
he drew me out of the mighty waters.
18  He delivered me from my strong enemy, ♦︎
from foes that were too mighty for me.
19  They came upon me in the day of my trouble; ♦︎
but the Lord was my upholder.
20  He brought me out into a place of liberty; ♦︎
he rescued me because he delighted in me.

Ecclesiastes 9: 11-18

11 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favour to the skilful; but time and chance happen to them all. 12For no one can anticipate the time of disaster. Like fish taken in a cruel net, and like birds caught in a snare, so mortals are snared at a time of calamity, when it suddenly falls upon them.

Wisdom Superior to Folly

13 I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed important to me. 14There was a little city with few people in it. A great king came against it and besieged it, building great siege-works against it. 15Now there was found in it a poor, wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man. 16So I said, ‘Wisdom is better than might; yet the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heeded.’
17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
than the shouting of a ruler among fools.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war,
but one bungler destroys much good.

1 Maccabees 4: 1-25

The Battle at Emmaus

4Now Gorgias took five thousand infantry and one thousand picked cavalry, and this division moved out by night 2to fall upon the camp of the Jews and attack them suddenly. Men from the citadel were his guides. 3But Judas heard of it, and he and his warriors moved out to attack the king’s force in Emmaus 4while the division was still absent from the camp. 5When Gorgias entered the camp of Judas by night, he found no one there, so he looked for them in the hills, because he said, ‘These men are running away from us.’

At daybreak Judas appeared in the plain with three thousand men, but they did not have armour and swords such as they desired. 7And they saw the camp of the Gentiles, strong and fortified, with cavalry all around it; and these men were trained in war. 8But Judas said to those who were with him, ‘Do not fear their numbers or be afraid when they charge. 9Remember how our ancestors were saved at the Red Sea, when Pharaoh with his forces pursued them. 10And now, let us cry to Heaven, to see whether he will favour us and remember his covenant with our ancestors and crush this army before us today. 11Then all the Gentiles will know that there is one who redeems and saves Israel.’

12 When the foreigners looked up and saw them coming against them, 13they went out from their camp to battle. Then the men with Judas blew their trumpets 14and engaged in battle. The Gentiles were crushed, and fled into the plain, 15and all those in the rear fell by the sword. They pursued them to Gazara, and to the plains of Idumea, and to Azotus and Jamnia; and three thousand of them fell. 16Then Judas and his force turned back from pursuing them, 17and he said to the people, ‘Do not be greedy for plunder, for there is a battle before us; 18Gorgias and his force are near us in the hills. But stand now against our enemies and fight them, and afterwards seize the plunder boldly.’

19 Just as Judas was finishing this speech, a detachment appeared, coming out of the hills. 20They saw that their army* had been put to flight, and that the Jews* were burning the camp, for the smoke that was seen showed what had happened. 21When they perceived this, they were greatly frightened, and when they also saw the army of Judas drawn up in the plain for battle, 22they all fled into the land of the Philistines. 23Then Judas returned to plunder the camp, and they seized a great amount of gold and silver, and cloth dyed blue and sea purple, and great riches. 24On their return they sang hymns and praises to Heaven—‘For he is good, for his mercy endures for ever.’ 25Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.

Galatians 5: 1-15

51For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

The Nature of Christian Freedom

Listen! I, Paul, am telling you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3Once again I testify to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the entire law. 4You who want to be justified by the law have cut yourselves off from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5For through the Spirit, by faith, we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. 6For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything; the only thing that counts is faith working* through love.

You were running well; who prevented you from obeying the truth? 8Such persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9A little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough. 10I am confident about you in the Lord that you will not think otherwise. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty. 11But my friends,* why am I still being persecuted if I am still preaching circumcision? In that case the offence of the cross has been removed. 12I wish those who unsettle you would castrate themselves!

13 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters;* only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence,* but through love become slaves to one another. 14For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ 15If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.
